43 and 44 Clerkenwell Green and 55 Clerkenwell Close

This is a group of early 19th-century terraced houses that now include a restaurant at 55 Clerkenwell Close, a pub at number 43, and a shop at number 44. The front of the pub at number 43 was remodelled around 1900. The buildings are constructed of yellow brick laid in Flemish bond, with some areas of stucco, and their roofs are hidden behind parapets. Number 55 Clerkenwell Close has a two-window front. Number 43 has a three-window front facing Clerkenwell Close and a two-window front facing Clerkenwell Green, while number 44 has a two-window front. The ground floor of 55 Clerkenwell Close is stuccoed and features banded rustication. It has a flat-arched entrance with a cornice, a 20th-century shallow bracketed bay window, and a vestigial cornice. The pub front at number 43 has a tiled base and pilasters supporting a fascia and cornice. The original window and door frames appear to survive, alongside some original engraved glass now set behind plate glass windows. Number 44 has a late 20th-century shop front. The upper-floor windows are flat-arched and have moulded stucco architraves. Those on the first floor have segmental pediments on consoles. There is a cornice and a blocking course along the top.

Inside The Crown Tavern, a late 19th-century bar back and bar counter remain largely intact. A back room contains a late 19th-century panelled dado and a fireplace, possibly dating to the same period. The staircase to the upper room has turned balusters.
