Description

Numbers 1 to 6 Milner Place comprise a group of six terraced houses built in 1841 by Roumieu and Gough, forming a link between Milner Square and Gibson Square. The houses are constructed of grey and beige stock brick in Flemish bond, with stucco dressings and banded stucco to the ground floor. The roof is gabled and covered in Welsh slate, with stucco party-wall stacks.

The houses are of Neoclassical style, arranged with a side-hall entrance and staircase. They are three storeys high, with a basement and attics to numbers 1, 2, 5, and 6. The upper floors each feature a tripartite window arrangement within a recessed central stucco bay, articulated by stucco pilasters carrying a simplified entablature. A stucco storey band runs along the first floor, while the full-length three-over-three sash window with margin lights, flanked by narrower three-over-three sashes, has cast-iron railings to a stucco balcony supported by stucco brackets. The second floor has a similar design, with shorter two-over-two sashes and iron window box supports. Steps lead to the entrance on the right side, featuring a doorway with plain jambs and a corniced head. Original three-panelled doors with fanlights, containing curved and radial glazing bars, are present at numbers 2, 3, and 5. A ground-floor round-arched two-over-two sash window with margin lights and a recessed stucco panel is located on the left side. A stucco band, cornice, and parapet complete the exterior. Dormer windows are present on numbers 1, 2, 5, and 6. Attached cast iron railings feature spike and foliated finials.
