Description
Numbers 76-86 (even) are a row of six terraced houses built around 1829. They are constructed from brown stock bricks arranged in Flemish bond, featuring a banded stucco ground floor and dressings. The gabled roofs are obscured by a blocking course, and there are brick party-wall stacks. The houses follow a side-hall entrance plan, standing three storeys tall with two windows each. The terrace is symmetrical, with full-height stucco Ionic pilasters on the upper storeys of the slightly projecting end houses.
Steps lead up to the entrances, with numbers 82-86 on the left, numbers 78-80 on the right, and number 76 facing Gainford Street. Each doorway features half-fluted column jambs supporting a corniced head, an original six-panelled door, and an elaborate patterned fanlight. The ground floor has 6/6 sash windows with curved and radial glazing bars, except for number 76, which has plain 1/1 sashes, and number 78, which has plain 2/2 sashes.
On the first floor, there is a stucco sill band beneath full-length architraved 6/6 sashes with consoled cornices, and coupled balconies with iron railings designed in a Vitruvian scroll and anthemion pattern. The second floor features a central block with a stucco sill band and gauged brick flat arches over 6/6 sashes, although number 76 has 20th-century 2/2 casements. The houses are topped with a stucco cornice and blocking course. Attached to the front are iron railings with ball and disc finials.
