Description
Numbers 46-62 (even) and attached railings are a group of nine terraced houses dating from the 1830s, located in Barnsbury Street, Islington. The houses are constructed of yellow stock bricks in a Flemish bond pattern, with rusticated stucco to the ground floor and stucco dressings. Welsh slate covers the mansard roofs, with dormers visible on numbers 60-62; the other roofs are concealed by a parapet. Brick party-wall stacks are present.
The design follows a side-hall entrance plan with a central staircase. The houses are arranged over three storeys, with a basement and attic in some cases, each having two windows. The ground-floor openings have a round arch. Steps lead to doorways with pilaster jambs, corniced heads, panelled doors and fanlights; some of the fanlights are patterned. Number 58 retains its original door, while the others have been replaced with 20th-century fanlights. The entrance to number 60 has been removed and replaced with a sash window, and number 62 has a side entrance and a 20th-century rear extension. The windows are 6/6 sashes, with curved and radial glazing bars and margin lights on the ground floor. The upper sashes have architraves. First-floor windows are full-length sashes with freizes and cornices, and each has an individual balcony with iron railings. A stucco cornice and blocking course runs along the top of the building. Attached iron railings are present.
