Description
This is a terrace of eleven houses, numbered 14 to 24, situated on River Street in Islington, in a street leading towards Myddelton Square. They were likely built around 1828, designed by William Chadwell Mylne, who was Surveyor to the New River Estate. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick in a Flemish bond, with banded stucco to the ground floor and stucco dressings. The roofs are mansard style, with Welsh and artificial slate; the roofs of numbers 20 to 23 retain these features, whilst others are obscured. Brick party-wall stacks are present.
The design follows a side-hall entrance plan. The terrace is three storeys high, with a basement, and generally features two windows per house, though number 24 is two storeys high. The terrace is symmetrical, with number 18 centrally positioned and incorporating a carriageway that projects slightly forward. Steps lead to a round-arched, architraved entrance on the left-hand side, featuring fluted Doric columns supporting a corniced head, a fanlight (with patterned detailing at numbers 14-16, 19-23), and original panelled doors to numbers 16, 18-19, 21-22, and 23-24.
The windows are flat-arched, with gauged brick surrounds, and are predominantly 6/6 sash windows. Many of the ground-floor sashes have curved and radial glazing bars and margin lights. A stucco sill band is present beneath the full-length sashes on the first floor, which are set within arched recesses, linked by stucco impost bands, and each has an individual iron balcony. A stucco band sits beneath a stucco cornice and blocking course; number 15 has been altered. Attached iron railings are present, topped with urn and acorn finials.
