Description
Numbers 8-31 Bewdley Street comprise a terrace of 24 houses built around 1836-1837. The houses are constructed of yellow and multi-coloured stock brick in a Flemish bond pattern. The ground floors are faced with stucco, lined as ashlar, with stucco dressings. The roofs are primarily Welsh slate, with numbers 8 and 9 having tile roofs, and number 27 an artificial slate roof; all include party-wall brick stacks.
The terrace is arranged in a Neo-classical style with a slightly projecting central bay (numbers 16-24). This central section is two storeys high, with a basement, and number 10 has an attic. Each section has two windows. A symmetrical arrangement includes low steps leading to original panelled front doors. The doors are located at numbers 12-20, 22-25, and 27-31, and are accompanied by fluted quarter columns, corniced heads, and various styles of fanlights: curved and radial for numbers 8-24, Gothic style for numbers 25-27, and Neo-classical patterned for numbers 28-31. The ground-floor windows are round-arched 8/8 sashes with curved glazing bars in a Gothic style. A stucco sill band and gauged brick flat arches are present above the windows, with upper full-length 6/6 sashes incorporating iron balconies. A stone-coped parapet tops the buildings; numbers 16-18 have a stucco frieze, cornice and parapet, number 19 has a stucco frieze and parapet, and number 10 has a roof dormer. Attached cast-iron area railings are present, finished with urn finials.
