Description

This is a terrace of early 19th-century houses on Northdown Street, Islington. The buildings are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco finishes. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet. Originally, the terrace comprised three and four storeys over a basement, with two windows per house, except for number 53, which has four. The terrace was originally symmetrical; numbers 41 to 45 and the inner bays of numbers 39 and 47 were originally set forward under a pediment. However, the visible arrangement now features seven houses to the left of the centrepiece and three to the right.

All window and door openings feature flat arches with gauged brick detailing. The entrances have engaged Greek Doric columns, a cornice, and a fanlight with original glazing, above a panelled door of original design. First-floor windows have "piano nobile" proportions and are accompanied by balconies with cast-iron railings. The central section of the terrace rises to four storeys and features four giant Ionic pilasters on the upper floors, supporting an entablature and pediment. The windows are 6/6 sash windows, with 3/3 sashes on the second floor of the central section. Other houses have dentil brickwork along the parapets. Stacks are located within the party walls.
