Description
The Fulham Gas Works War Memorial, built around 1920, is a notable war memorial located on Sands End Lane. It features a rendered plinth with moulded coping that supports two bronze inscription panels. The upper panel displays a relief of an armoured, winged figure representing St Michael, along with the inscription "THESE MEN DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY." Below this, there is the inscription "1914-1919. The Gas Light and Coke Company," which is accompanied by ten columns listing the names of the deceased. The lower panel also contains ten columns of names and bears the inscription "TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE COMPANY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF 1939-45. REQUIESCAT IN PACE," with an enamelled badge of the company in the top left-hand corner. The Imperial Gas Light and Coke Company established its presence on this site in 1824, making this memorial an unusual example of a company war memorial. A second panel commemorating the Second World War, set within a classical frame, is located nearby on a modern brick base but is not included in this listing.
