Description

The Gas Light and Coke Company War Memorial Rotunda is a war memorial built to honor gas company workers who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. It was constructed after the Second World War in a new memorial garden on the site of the former Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks.

This rotunda is made of cast-stone and features an openwork wrought-iron dome, along with two bronze plaques. It is situated within the memorial garden, close to the Gas Light and Coke Company memorial lamp, which was originally located at Beckton Gas Works and is Grade II-listed. Nearby, there is also a memorial plaque and a statue of Sir Corbett Woodhall, both of which are Grade II-listed, as well as seven Grade II-listed gasholders.

The rotunda itself is designed with six spiral-fluted Corinthian columns that rest on decorative pedestals. These columns support a richly decorated frieze, topped by the openwork wrought-iron dome. The structure is set on a circular stone base that is paved and features a floral mosaic at the center, where a stone memorial tablet is placed. This tablet carries two bronze plaques. The upper plaque depicts an angel, likely Archangel Michael, holding a sword and wearing armor, along with an inscription that reads: "THESE MEN DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ NAMES/ 1914-1919/ THE GAS LIGHT AND COKE COMPANY." It lists 548 names of those who died during the First World War. The lower plaque is inscribed: "TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE MEMBERS OF/ THE COMPANY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR/ OF 1939-45 REQUIESCANT IN PACE/ NAMES," and it includes 402 names along with the painted arms of the company, which features a pair of salamanders breathing fire.
