Description

Twelvetrees Crescent Bridge is a bridge built in 1872 by engineer Peter William Barlow. It was constructed for the Imperial Gaslight and Coke Company to provide access to their gas works, which opened in 1873. The bridge features two arches that span the River Lea and Bow Creek, with the Lea arch measuring approximately 42 meters and the Bow Creek arch about 39 meters. Long brick abutments support the structure on either side. The bridge is made of seven wrought-iron ribs with lattice work in between, and it has wrought-iron plated and riveted girders on the outer sides. The arches spring from brick abutments that are faced in stone and rest on a central brick pier, which is also stone-faced and has a stone cornice. There is a cast-iron balustrade with interlacing segmental arches on both sides of the bridge, along with six cast-iron gas lamp holders that retain their original bases. The bridge is part of a group with the nearby listed gas holders.
