Description

The Gas Light and Coke Company War Memorial Lamp is a war memorial dedicated to the employees of the Gas Light & Coke Company who lost their lives in both World Wars. The architect is unknown, and it is possible that the memorial was relocated to this site from the Beckton gas works. The memorial features a stone column topped with a flat capital, on which rests a tall octagonal gas lamp made of iron and glass. This structure is set on a rectangular stone base that previously held two bronze plaques honoring the employees who died in World Wars I and II; these plaques were stolen in 2007. The base also included ceramic tiles displaying the company's arms, which featured two salamanders breathing fire.

The memorial is located in a garden to the north of the former London Gas Museum and is accompanied by two other memorials and a statue of Sir Corbett Woodall, who served as Governor of the Gas Light & Coke Company from 1906 to 1916. The war memorial has Group Value with the Bromley-by-Bow gas holders to the north and the statue of Sir Corbett Woodall.

This memorial holds significant historical interest as it commemorates the many employees of the Gas Light & Coke Company who died in both world wars. Architecturally, it is notable for its stately column and the gas lamp, which symbolizes an 'eternal flame' and connects it to the history of this important company.
