Description
The office building at the former Imperial Gas Works in Fulham was constructed around 1850, attributed to Francis Edwards, for the Imperial Gas Light & Coke Company. It features a stucco fronted brick exterior. The main elevation consists of five bays, with a lower two-storey section extending to the south. The building has two floors. The entrance door is set within a moulded architrave and includes an overlight. The windows are framed with moulded surrounds; the ground floor windows are mainly 2/2 pane sashes, while the first floor windows typically have 2 pane upper sashes over 12 pane lower sashes. There are entablatures at both the first floor and cornice levels, and sunken panels beneath the first floor windows, with two panels positioned on either side of the central window. The building is topped with a parapet featuring a central pediment. The north and south returns each have four bay elevations. Inside, the building retains an open well stone staircase, which has a concrete render over the steps and cast iron rails. The entrance and sides of the staircase are lined with tiles, and there is some plasterwork and joinery in the tall ground floor rooms, including moulded window surrounds. This building was originally constructed as the offices for the Fulham Gas Works and is part of a site with a significant historical connection to the gas industry, dating back to 1824.
