Description

Stanley House is a substantial house dating to circa 1691, with later alterations and additions. It is located on King’s Road, originally listed as Principal's House for the College of St Mark and St John. The house has a basement and pedimented dormers, with five windows at the front. Constructed of red brick, it features brick pier projections on the sides and a red brick band at the first floor level. A wood block bracketed cave cornice sits below the slate roof. The windows have red gauged flat arches and brick dressings, while the entrance is surrounded by stone. The rear elevation is similar, but a former doorway, now a window, has a stone architrave, consoles, a pulvinated frieze, and a moulded head. A two-storey brick extension is located on the north-east side, including a one-storey stone loggia with square columns. This loggia contains the first casts taken of the Elgin Marbles.
