Description

This is a row of four symmetrical blocks of houses dating from the mid-to-late 19th century, numbers 24 to 54 Manor Road. Each block contains four houses, arranged over two storeys and an attic, with eight windows per block. The third and sixth houses in the row feature two-storey canted bays. The houses are constructed of yellow brick with stucco dressings, and feature an entablature and blocking course located above the first floor. A raised attic, with a pitched roof and arcaded glazing, sits above, set back from the main facade. The attic is brought forward over the first two bays at each end, finished with a bracketed cornice. A central pediment, topped with a tall chimney, is a prominent feature. The windows are plain sashes, with shouldered moulded lintels on the ground and first floors. The houses have half-glazed doors, each with a tall, rectangular fanlight set within a quasi-classical surround. Numbers 24 to 54 (even) are historically linked as a group with numbers 2 to 56 (even) on Bethune Road, along with their forecourt walls.
