Description

This is a row of four symmetrical blocks of mid-to-late 19th century houses, numbered 2 to 32 Bethune Road, London. The houses are constructed of yellow brick with stucco dressings. Each block contains ten windows, with the third and seventh houses in each block featuring two-storey canted bays. An entablature and blocking course sits above the first floor, and above this is a recessed attic with a pitched roof and arcaded windows. At the centre and ends of the blocks, the attic projects forward to be level with the front facade, covering two bays and finished with a bracketed cornice. Nos 2 to 8 and 9 to 16 feature a raised pediment instead of the central projecting attic. Tall brick chimneys flank these central features, and are paired with tall, bargeboarded gables, incorporating stepped, round-headed lights. The windows are plain sash windows, with shouldered moulded lintels on the ground and first floors. The canted bays have cast iron guards to the wide first-floor cills which are supported by paired brackets forming lozenge panels below. The half-glazed front doors have tall fanlights and sidelights, with paired inner doors within a quasi-classical porch having matching surrounds. The houses, along with the forecourt walls to Nos 2 to 6, form a group with Nos 24 to 54 in Manor Road.
