Description
The Spreat Monument in Abney Park Cemetery is a Grade II listed structure dedicated to John Spreat (1795-1865) and his wife Ann Elizabeth (1798-1884). It was created between 1868 and 1872 by Alfred Waterhouse and carved by Farmer and Brindley.
This three-stage monument features a square plinth adorned with clustered engaged corner columns that are inset with shields. Above this, there is a slightly smaller stage set on a heavy sloping band, flanked by single corner columns with intricately carved capitals. This stage displays inscriptions dedicated to the Spreats on its south and west faces. The frieze and cornice are decorated with dog tooth mouldings. The top stage culminates in a pyramidal cap with a broken finial and additional mouldings. John Spreat passed away in Highbury New Town, and his wife had this monument erected in his memory.
