Description
Hackney Baptist Chapel and Sunday School is a large building from the late 19th century. The main west front features a central two-storey gabled bay, which includes a large wheel window and a twin-arched entrance below. This is flanked by four-storey towers topped with tall mansard roofs. The building is constructed of red brick, accented with stone and blue and grey brick dressings, and has slated roofs arranged in various patterns. It exhibits a neo-Romanesque style, characterized by round-headed windows arranged in pairs or rows with impost bands. The entrance is flanked by shafts with foliage capitals, and all windows have hoodmoulds. Below the gable coping, there is a wide band of decorative tiles. Wrought iron finials adorn all roof angles, and cast iron lamp-holders are positioned beside the doorway. The left side of the building has a two-storey, five-bay return facing Downs Road, leading to the north front of the Sunday School section, which is in a similar style but features a pierced parapet. The Sunday School itself is two storeys high with a gable end, five linked first-floor windows with ornamental iron glazing bars, and a central entrance.
