Description
The Church of St Matthias, built in 1851 by William Butterfield, features a tall nave with low, pent aisles and a saddleback crossing tower. The chancel is short and lower, with aisles that are steeply gabled at right angles. Constructed from stock brick with stone dressings, it includes a corbel table at the eaves and below the parapet of the tower. The high-pitched slated roof adds to its distinctive character, which is notable despite being built at low cost and incorporating thoughtful details.
The most striking feature of the tower is its very long bell openings, complemented by freely-adapted late Decorated type window tracery. Inside, the nave consists of five bays supported by alternate octagonal and compound piers. There is a tall chancel arch and half-arches at the east of the aisles, while the north-west porch boasts a cusped timber roof.
