Description
Gayhurst Primary School, built around 1874 by E R Robson, is a large building featuring three sections, each with different roof styles. The left section has a pitched tiled roof with a hip and a tall gablet on the right. The other sections have ridges at right angles, with scrolled shaped gable ends facing the road; the right section features a pediment, while the central section is larger and has a bell-cupola that projects over a half-hexagonal pilaster supported by a stone corbel. The building is constructed of stock brick with red brick and stone dressings, and the gable ends are all made of red brick. Although the storey heights vary, they are unified by a main moulded brick cornice below the top floor, where each section has a tall central window. The left section's window is under a small shaped gable that breaks the eaves, the right section's window is under a square hoodmould, and the central section's window is under an ogee hoodmould with raised brick quasi-palmette decoration in the tympanum. A square bay projects from the left of the central block and is topped by a balustrade at the main cornice level. The rear elevation is similar to that facing Appleby Street.
