Description
This is a pair of early to mid-19th century terraced houses at 40-46 Northchurch Road, in two pairs. Numbers 40 and 42 have three windows, with the outer windows set back within a recessed entrance bay. Numbers 44 and 46 have two windows each. The roofs are low-pitched and covered with slate, featuring an eaves soffit. The facades are stuccoed, with a band separating the ground floor and basement from the first floor, incorporating banded rustication that forms voussoirs around the basement windows, highlighted with rusticated keys. Ionic pilasters rise from this first floor band to the eaves. The first-floor windows are sash windows, many with bars, and are set within moulded architraves. The ground-floor casement windows have margin lights, console bracketed cornices, and ornamental cast-iron balconies. The entrances feature four-panel doors topped with a console bracketed cornice and pediment. A one-bay extension is attached to the left side of number 46. Numbers 40 to 54 (even) are part of a group with numbers 56 and 58, which are of local interest.
