Description

Nos. 1, 3, and 5 Stone House Court is a shopping arcade located at the rear of Nos. 65 and 66 Houndsditch, built between 1928 and 1931 by Sir Albert Richardson. The design reflects an elegant interpretation of the Regency style. The most prominent building is No. 1, which stands four storeys high and features a single-window range. The ground floor is dominated by a shopfront that projects into a segmental bay, topped with a concave metal roof. This shopfront is made entirely of glazing bars, which intersect in the transom area to create Gothick tracery.

The three-storey blocks that are set back from No. 1 line a yard behind Houndsditch and include tripartite windows on the first floor, arranged in a three-window range, with a chamfered corner that has a double-door entrance. The stone cladding on these lower blocks is smooth, transitioning to vitrified brick on the east return of No. 5, while the Gothick shopfronts maintain a consistent design. A moulded storey band separates the first and second floors, and there is a moulded cornice above the parapet. All openings feature flat arches, and the upper-floor windows of No. 1 have flush frames in a sash pattern. The ashlar stone is treated as individual blocks with recessed joints, creating a distinctive appearance. The cornice at the roof parapet is adorned with an unusual frieze of circles.
