Description
The Bishopsgate Parish Memorial is a Portland Stone memorial cross located in the churchyard of St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate church, which is listed as Grade II*. It stands to the south of the church and west of the Grade II-listed drinking fountains and lanterns on Bishopsgate. The memorial is approximately 4 meters high and features an ornamented wheel-head cross that rises from a moulded collar with the monogram IHS. The octagonal cross shaft is decorated with blind arcading below the collar and above the moulded foot. This shaft is set on an octagonal plinth, which is supported by a three-stepped base.
The plinth has inscriptions on four of its eight faces:
On the east face, it reads "KITCHENER/ JUNE 5 1916/ LEST WE FORGET."
The south face states "IN MEMORIAM/ OFFICERS AND MEN/ OF THE/ HONOURABLE/ ARTILLERY/ COMPANY/ WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR/ AUGUST 4 1916."
The west face commemorates "IN MEMORY OF/ OUR/ BRAVE DEAD/ OF/ BISHOPSGATE/ 1914 – 1916."
Finally, the north face honors "JOHN TRAVERS/ CORNWELL VC/ OF/ HMS CHESTER/ THE/ BATTLE OF JUTLAND/ JUNE 1916/ HERO OF 16 YEARS."
