Description
The Port of London Authority's warehouses and boundary walls to Middlesex Street and New Street date from the late 18th century. This large and irregular group of buildings surrounds enclosed and partially enclosed courtyards and is mainly six storeys high, with the top storey being an addition. The buildings are constructed of pinkish/yellow brick, featuring occasional dressings of Portland stone. The window arches are mostly flat, and there is timber framing for the tiers of loading doors, which include modern gantries. A parapet crowns the slated roof.
The elevations facing Devonshire Square and New Street have more stone dressings, particularly the latter, which has suffered significant alterations. The southwest elevation of the central block, which faces the Cutler Street entrance, is notable for its arcaded ground storey of stone, a cornice below the fourth storey, and a large clock bracketed from the first floor. The interiors are made of timber, featuring two rows of columns; the columns in the lower storeys are well finished with moulded caps and bases. Thin cast iron columns support the added top storey, which has Queen post roof trusses made of timber. There is a high, panelled wall along Middlesex Street and New Street.
