Description
The Rising Sun Public House is a public house built in 1896 by Treadwell and Martin. It features a stucco exterior with a brick extension and showcases elaborate Art Nouveau Gothic design. The building stands four storeys high with a basement. It has one bay with a three-bay return and a one-bay extension to Windmill Street. The ground floor has a pilastered public house frontage with an entrance in a splayed corner, which was altered in the 20th century. The first floor has three-light transom and mullion windows with leaded panes, while the second and third floors have two-light windows. Each bay is separated by tourelles topped with pinnacles. Above the window bays are gables with segmental pediments. The facade features a lavish use of vertical strips, scrollwork, heraldic beasts, and cupids' heads in relief. A bartizan rises from the first to the third floor on the splayed corner, supported by an elaborate corbel that includes a male figure. To the right of this is a plaque that reads "Built by F. A. Rhodes 1897, Treadwell & Martin." The brick extension has three-light transom and mullion windows and a stone-capped Dutch gable. The interior was entirely remodelled in a historicist style around 1993.
