Description
Kentish Town Sorting Office, formerly known as No. 30 Leighton Road, is a Royal Mail sorting office built in 1903. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a hipped slated roof topped with a tall, panelled brick chimney stack. This chimney is set above a segmental pediment and is flanked by brick pediments with ball finials, which sit above Diocletian windows adorned with keystones. The design is symmetrical, with a lower single-storey facade that projects forward beneath the Diocletian windows, creating a segmental-arched entrance. This entrance is framed by pilasters with enriched capitals and a frieze inscribed "Postmens Office," topped by a pediment featuring a carved royal coat of arms. The original entrance includes part-glazed double doors. The left bay of the facade has two sash windows, with the upper halves featuring glazing bars, while the right bay has three smaller sash windows, also with glazing bars in the upper halves. Both bays are topped with brick parapets that match the doorway frieze and include central segmental-headed plaques carved with royal GR monograms. The left bay retains its original rainwater head and pipe. The interior has not been inspected.
