Description
The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady Help of Christians, built between 1864 and 1867 by J Tarring, was formerly a Methodist church. It is constructed from Kentish rag random rubble with freestone dressings and is designed in the Gothic style. The church features a five-bay nave with a clerestory and a sanctuary, along with a tower topped by a spire located at the north-west corner. The west facade showcases an elaborately gabled central doorway with recessed orders, double doors set in pointed arches, and quatrefoil tracery above. Above this doorway is a seven-light window with geometrical tracery. The facade is flanked by buttresses, including those on the south aisle gable and tower, which are adorned with tall pinnacles. The spire is designed with a buttressed belfry and lucarnes above. The north facade consists of three gabled and buttressed bays, each featuring two traceried windows that reflect the interior galleries. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to retain pine galleries on three sides, supported by enriched cast-iron columns.
