Description
The Pineapple public house, built around 1868, is an example of mid-Victorian architecture located on Leverton Street. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with a stucco-faced ground floor featuring moulded stone window arches. It has a three-bay elevation and stands three storeys high, with a central doorway flanked by windows that have three-panel aprons. All openings are segmental-headed, adorned with pineapple motifs at the keystones. The upper windows are 2/2-pane sashes. The ground floor showcases channelled rustication, moulded imposts, radiating voussoirs, and a modillion cornice at the first-floor level, supported by acanthus-enriched brackets at each end. The southeast corner is curved with raised brick quoins. The side elevation continues the ground floor rustication and includes a now-blocked subsidiary door and window, along with three first-floor windows (the western pair are blind) and one second-floor window.
Inside, the pub has been altered but still features a notable behind-bar screen with etched glass mirrors depicting vases of flowers and pineapples below. The frieze includes mirrored lettering that reads "WHISKIES BRANDIES WINES" and is supported by four Corinthian pilasters with mirrored strips decorated with lotus leaves. The rear counter is held up by consoles featuring pineapple decoration, and the ceiling in the main bar retains a decorative plaster cornice. This public house is a distinctive example of a mid-Victorian establishment, serving a newly developed suburban area, and despite internal changes, it maintains a fine behind-bar screen.
