Description

Numbers 1 to 7 form a terrace of seven houses, with numbers 2 to 5 and number 7 later used as hotels, the Midland Hotel (numbers 2-5) and the Clifton Hotel (number 7) respectively. They were built around 1827 to 1829. The buildings are of yellow stock brick, although numbers 2 to 5 and 7 have been painted. A stucco band runs along the first-floor sill level. Numbers 2 to 5 feature painted channelled cement on the ground floors. Numbers 2 to 5 have slate mansard roofs with dormers, which were added after 1974. The terrace is three storeys high with basements. Each house has two windows. The ground floor has round-arched openings. Doorways 1 to 5 have stucco architraves, with fluted quarter Doric columns supporting cornice heads. These doorways are over fanlights—number 1’s has patterned glass—and panelled doors. Number 7 has a 20th-century doorway with a glazed door. Number 1 has coloured glass margin lights. The ground floor windows in numbers 2 to 5 are sash windows with architraves. Gauged brick flat arches are above the upper floor sash windows; number 7 has casements. The first-floor windows are set into shallow round-arched recesses with cast-iron balconies. The buildings have parapets. The interior of number 1 retains original staircase features, cornices, fireplaces, and fittings; the interiors of the other houses were not inspected. Attached cast-iron railings, with urn and disc finials, run along the front of the properties, defining the areas.
