Description

27, 28 and 29 Great Queen Street is a terrace of three houses built around 1733. The buildings are constructed of brown brick with a red brick cornice below a later parapet. There is a moulded brick band at the second floor level, and the roofs are tiled with dormers. The houses feature red dressings and segmental arches above the flush frame sash windows, with Nos. 27 and 28 having three windows each, while No. 29 has two windows. The terrace is three storeys high, with attics and basements.

No. 27 has a stucco ground floor with a band at the first floor level. It features a wooden doorcase with Doric pilasters, triglyphs above, and open mutule pediments. There is an archivolt and key to semicircular fanlights, along with a panelled door and two square-headed, recessed sash windows to the right. The interior includes the original staircase.

No. 28 has a projecting earlier 19th-century shopfront with a console bracketed entablature, although the window has been altered. It also has a wooden doorcase with Doric pilasters, triglyphs above, and open mutule pediments, along with an archivolt and key to semicircular fanlights and a panelled door. The interior is virtually complete with a panelled interior and original staircase. The first-floor front room features a moulded plaster ceiling, and there are some H-L hinges. The entrance door has an interesting collection of locks, latches, and a chain.

No. 29 has a later 19th-century shopfront, and both the window and house door have been altered. The interior retains the original staircase and most of the original panelling. There is a lead rainwater head and pipe located between Nos. 28 and 29.
