Description

Numbers 43-47 are a group of five terraced houses that remain from a terrace on the north side of Mecklenburgh Square, built around 1824-1825 by Joseph Kay. The houses were constructed by T. Weeding, except for No. 43, which was built by Woolcot & Browning, and No. 47, which was built by S. Wright. They are made of yellow stock brick with some later patching and have rusticated stucco ground floors. The buildings rise four storeys and include basements, with three windows each. The round-arched doorways feature reeded surrounds, patterned fanlights, and double panelled doors. The windows have gauged brick flat arches and recessed sashes, while the first floor has continuous balconies. A continuous stucco cornice is present at the third-floor level, and there is stucco coping on the parapets. The attached cast-iron railings with urn finials are notable features that enclose the areas in front of the houses. The interiors have not been inspected.
