GV II Chest tomb with sculptured dog. c1865. Marble. Rectangular plinth with chest tomb having battered sides, clasping pilaster strips, projecting cornice with antefixae and pediment to short end having a relief wreath with ribbons. Beneath pediment, a relief portrait cameo with inscription. On plinth in front, a life sized sculpture of Sayers's mastiff dog, Lion, recumbent.

HISTORICAL NOTE: Thomas Sayers was the last of the bare-fisted prizefighters. Immensely popular during his lifetime, his funeral was said to have been attended by 10,000 people with his dog riding on an individual open carriage immediately behind the coffin.
