Description
The tomb of Thomas Sayers is located in Highgate (Western) Cemetery and dates from around 1865. It is a chest tomb made of marble, featuring a rectangular plinth and a chest tomb with battered sides. The tomb has clasping pilaster strips, a projecting cornice with antefixae, and a pediment at the short end that displays a relief wreath with ribbons. Beneath the pediment is a relief portrait cameo with an inscription. In front of the plinth, there is a life-sized sculpture of Sayers's mastiff dog, Lion, depicted in a recumbent position.
Historically, Thomas Sayers was known as the last of the bare-fisted prizefighters and was immensely popular during his lifetime. His funeral reportedly attracted around 10,000 attendees, with his dog riding in an individual open carriage directly behind the coffin.
