Description
The monument to Brodie McGhie Wilcox is a tall sandstone obelisk with a pyramidal top, set on a battered pedestal featuring raised panels, which in turn rests on a stepped granite plinth. An armorial cartouche is affixed to the obelisk. The pedestal bears an inscription that reads: ‘In Affectionate Remembrance of Brodie McGhie Willcox Esq. of Portman Square London. For 15 years one of the representatives for the Borough of Southampton Hants, who departed this life the 6th of November 1862, in his seventy eighth year. Deservedly Lamented.' Additional inscriptions on the pedestal honor his wife Sophia Ann (died 1876), his daughters Ellen (died 1871), Marion Elizabeth (died 1903), and Rose Maria (died 1909), as well as his son Brodie Augustus (died 1901).
