Description

The mausoleum of Henry Eaton, Lord Cheylesmore, located in Highgate (Western) Cemetery, was built around 1891 and is designed in the style of a temple. It is constructed from Portland stone and has a rectangular plan. The mausoleum features a recessed entrance that is flanked by Ionic half columns. The doorway is architraved and topped with a dentil pediment that displays the coat of arms. The entrance is adorned with enriched cast-iron double doors that have grilled openings, and it is accessed by steps. Above the columns is an entablature with a projecting cornice and a blocking course. The frieze is inscribed with the name "Cheylesmore" and is flanked by carved roundels. Historically, Lord Cheylesmore was a silk merchant, the owner of White's Club, and served as a Member of Parliament for Coventry for 21 years.
