Description
The tomb of John Atcheler is located in Highgate (Western) Cemetery and dates from around 1853. It is a chest tomb made of marble, featuring a tall rectangular shape with stepped angles and a projecting cornice. The tomb is topped by a sculptured horse, which is depicted wearing a surcingle and bridle, along with a tree stump. The horse has sustained damage, with broken legs due to vandalism noted during a survey in 1995. John Atcheler was known to be a horse slaughterer for Queen Victoria.
