Walls, Steps, Gateway, Pond And Pergola To Italianate Garden, Number 41 Witanhurst

The Italianate garden at Number 41 Witanhurst features walls, steps, a gateway, a pond, and a pergola, designed around 1913, likely by Harold Peto for Sir Arthur Crosfield. It includes brick construction with stone dressings, coping, columns, and piers, along with cast-iron gates. The garden consists of three linked compartments that step downhill and are enclosed by stone-coped brick walls.

Stone-coped balustraded steps lead from a shaped wall into the first compartment, which contains a central pond with a fountain and surrounding statues. Similar steps provide access to the central compartment. The third, most sunken compartment is reached through tall stone gate piers that are panelled and corniced, featuring a cast-iron gate and decorative wrought-iron overthrow. Substantial stone balustrades flank these piers atop a brick wall. Stone balustraded steps descend into an apsed rectangular garden, which is adorned with a stone-columned pergola that wraps around the apse formed by a segmental-shaped reflecting pond.
