Description

This is a detached villa dating from around 1820, with later alterations. Built of stucco, it has a long, narrow plan. The single-storey front is characterized by paired pilasters that flank a tripartite window and support a deep entablature topped with a pediment. A 20th-century projecting rectangular bay window is set into the front elevation at approximately half its height. Recessed entrance extensions with 20th-century doorways are present on both sides of the building. The interiors were not inspected. Attached to the property is a low garden wall with spearhead finials, along with railings. The wall is punctuated by round-arched gateposts of stele type, featuring a lamp overthrow. No. 14A served as St John's Chapel School from 1830, later becoming St Stephen's National School by 1885. During World War I, it was used as studios by the Carline family and served as a meeting place for a prominent group of painters known as the Hampstead Set or the Downshire Hill Group.
