Description

Nos. 2, 3 and 4 Upper Terrace comprise three terraced houses. No. 2 dates from around 1740, but was refaced in the early 20th century to replicate its original appearance. It is built of brown brick and extends over four storeys, with three windows per floor. It features a 20th-century Doric doorcase with an open pediment and a panelled door. The windows are flush-framed sashes with red brick flat arches. A rebuilt parapet tops the building. The interior has not been inspected.

Nos. 3 and 4 also date from around 1740, but have undergone 20th-century Neo-Georgian refacing. Basil Champneys made alterations in 1882 and 1888, and a rear extension, designed by Edwin Lutyens between 1925 and 1930 for the Brocklebank family, was added. These houses are built of brown brick with a tiled mansard roof and dormers. They extend over three storeys and have attic space. There are six windows facing the street. A central entrance features a pedimented doorcase with Roman Doric columns and a fretted frieze, framing a panelled door. Recessed sashes are set within gauged red brick flat arches. A parapet tops the building. The rear extension, in a Neo-Georgian style, is two storeys high with five windows. It includes a pedimented case above French doors, and uses segmental arched, flush-framed sashes with exposed boxing on the upper floor and flat arches on the ground floor. The interiors of Nos. 3 and 4 have not been inspected.
