Description
6 and 8 Ferncroft Avenue are a pair of semi-detached houses built in 1901 by CHB Quennell and constructed by GW Hart. They are made of red brick with brick quoins at the angles of the first floor. The houses feature tiled hipped and gabled roofs, dormers, chimney-stacks, and overhanging bracketed eaves. They are symmetrically designed, with two storeys and attics, and each house has three windows.
The outer gabled bays project and have canted bowed bay windows with sash windows that have glazing bars in the upper halves only. The first floors feature Venetian type windows, with segmental arches that extend into the tile-hung gables. The quoined angles have coved cornices that resemble pilasters with capitals. The entrances are located at the angles of the outer and central bays and have porches supported by columns on pedestals, with a cornice hood above. The panelled doors have overlights and sidelights made of strips of small panes and are accessed by steps.
The ground floor windows have gauged brick flat arches; No. 6 has a tripartite sash window with glazing bars in the upper half, while No. 8 features a transom and mullion casement window with small leaded panes. A continuous brick band with modillion detailing runs along the first floor, which has tripartite sashes and single sashes above the porches. The interiors have not been inspected.
