Description

A pair of semi-detached houses located on Ferncroft Avenue, built between 1901 and 1902 by CHB Quennell, with construction carried out by GW Hart. The houses are built of red brick with tiled hipped and gabled roofs, featuring dormers—number 12 has a segmental-arched top to its dormer—and chimney stacks. The roofs have overhanging eaves with a coved cornice. The design is symmetrical. The houses are two storeys and have attics. Each house has three windows. The projecting gabled outer bays feature canted bowed bays with sashes having glazing bars to the top halves. First-floor windows are of a Venetian style, with segmental arches projecting into the tile-hung gables. Slightly projecting entrance bays, situated at the angle of the outer and central bays, form porches at ground floor level, featuring gauged brick round arches and keystones. The porches contain panelled doors with overlights and sidelights composed of strips of small panes, as well as first-floor sashes. A continuous modillion brick band runs along the first floor. The central bays have tripartite sashes to both floors; the ground floors have gauged brick flat arches with keystones, and the top halves of the windows have glazing bars. The interiors were not inspected.
