Description
The College Chapel at King's College was built between 1928 and 1929 by architects Percy Morley Horder and Verner Rees to honor Miss Anne Richardson, a former Vice-Principal. The chapel features rendered brickwork with a stone portico and has a shallow hipped roof with projecting eaves. Its design is austere and restrained in a Classical style, with a rectangular plan and a chancel that forms a semicircular apse internally. The eastern elevation is single storey, while the western elevation is double-height. The Doric portico leads to double wooden panelled and studded doors with a patterned overlight. The chapel has small rectangular windows with small panes and a continuous plain sill band, along with small clerestory windows.
Inside, entry is at half height, with a balcony and double steps leading down into the main body of the chapel. The interior is plain, featuring pilaster strips and a panelled ceiling, with the apse illuminated by windows positioned high on each side. Historically, Miss Richardson requested that the chapel be "small and simple... in which no Christian ministry shall be impossible."
