Description

St Luke's Church Vicarage is a house dating from 1902-3, designed by Basil Champneys. It is constructed of red brick with tile hanging and stone dressings, and has a tiled roof with a tall, asymmetrically placed slab chimney-stack and exposed rafter ends under the eaves.

The front of the building, designed in a Free Tudor style to complement the adjacent church, contrasts with a less formal rear elevation. The front features three storeys, attic space, and basements. A central gabled bay has three-light transom and mullion windows with small panes on each floor to the left and smaller two-light windows to the right. An attic window is set within a stone-coped gable with a finial. To the left is a two-storey bay, with the ground floor forming a round-arched porch and the upper floor featuring a three-light transom and mullion window; a slit window is present on the return. To the right, an entrance porch is at first-floor level, with a two-light window below, partly tile hung, followed by two stepped back bays of differing heights, all with similar windows and some areas tile hung. A right-hand bay incorporates a basement tunnel leading to the garden. The building features enriched Gothic cast-iron rainwater heads.

The rear elevation, in a Vernacular Revival manner, is symmetrical and includes a basement at garden level. It features a central stack flanked by pairs of windows on each level, with extensive tile hanging. A pair of canted bays are at first-floor level, linked by a porch; the second storey is tile hung, and a pair of dormer gables are set within a hipped roof with bargeboards and a tall chimney in between. A balcony is present on what is effectively the ground floor. All windows are leaded casements, and good cast-iron gutterheads are also present. The interior was noted to be of spatial interest, though it was not inspected.
