Description
Numbers 45 and 46 are two semi-detached houses built around 1729 for J Davis, with later alterations and a mid-19th century extension at the south end. The houses are constructed of brown brick with plain brick bands at floor levels and below the parapet, with a stucco extension to one. They have massive slate mansard roofs with dormers. The houses are arranged over three storeys, with attics and basements. Number 45 has three windows and a half-blind window; Number 46 has five windows. Number 45 features an entrance in a side extension, incorporating a wooden doorcase with Corinthian fluted pilasters on pedestals and an architrave curved upwards to the centre of the frieze. It has a panelled door with an overlight. Number 46 has a wooden prostyle portico with Doric columns on pedestals and a dentil pediment, as well as a fanlight and panelled door. The windows are flush, two-pane sashes with gauged red brick flat arches. A lead rainwater head located between the houses bears the inscription “DIE 1729”.
The interiors of the houses were not fully inspected, but Number 46 is noted to retain fine panelling, particularly in the 18th-century entrance hall. Number 45 retains panelling and other original features. Attached wrought-iron railings enclose the front areas.
