Description

Numbers 29-39 and 39B, 39C, Chalcot Crescent is a terrace of six houses built between 1860 and 1868, likely by J Burden. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick with rusticated stucco to the ground floors. They are three storeys high and have basements. Each house has two windows, with Numbers 29 and 39 having three windows and a recessed entrance bay. The stucco doorcases have pilasters supporting an entablature, and the doorways have pilaster jambs carrying cornice heads, fanlights, and panelled doors. The windows are recessed sashes with margin glazing; the upper floors have architraves, and the first floors have console bracketed cornices. A stucco cornice and blocking course runs along the terrace, with console brackets on Numbers 29-35. The interiors were not inspected. Attached cast-iron railings with spearhead finials enclose the areas. Number 37 was the residence of Dr. Jose Rizal, a writer and national hero of the Philippines, a fact commemorated by a GLC plaque.
