Description

Numbers 131-137 Whitfield Street is a terrace of four houses and shops dating from the late 18th century, with some alterations. The buildings are constructed of multi-coloured stock brick, featuring later patching. They rise four storeys and include basements or cellars, with two windows each. The windows have gauged brick flat arches above recessed sashes, and there are parapets on top.

No. 131 has a wooden double shopfront that has been restored and altered, featuring small panes in the windows, central double part-glazed doors, and an inswept frieze with a modillion cornice. To the right is a square-headed house door with a fanlight and a panelled door. Attached cast-iron railings lead to the areas.

No. 133 features a round-arched doorway with a radial fanlight. It has been mostly rebuilt in the late 20th century but is included for its group value.

No. 135 displays a wooden double shopfront with pilasters topped with palm leaf capitals, supporting an entablature with a dentil cornice. The shopfront is segmentally bowed with panelled risers, and there is a rectangular fanlight with a radial pattern above the central shop doorway. The house doorway to the left has a six-panelled door and an overlight.

No. 137 has a wooden double shopfront that has been restored and altered, featuring 20th-century segmental-arched shop window glazing above original panelled risers and an original entablature with a dentil cornice. It retains one elaborate stucco console with a winged human mask and a rosette stop above. The central shop doorway is panelled and partly margin-glazed, with an overlight. The house doorway to the left is now blocked but originally had an overlight with a cast-iron relief Classical lamp.

The interiors were not inspected. Historically, these houses and shops are significant as they are among the only original buildings remaining from a terraced street associated with the former Fitzroy Market, alongside Nos. 159 and 161 Whitfield Street.
