Description

Number 18 and the attached wall, railings, and gate piers are two houses that have been combined into one. They were built between 1871 and 1872 by architect Alfred Waterhouse and were refurbished around 1990. The building is made of Portland stone and features a slated roof with tall, decorated stone slab chimneys and three symmetrical gabled dormers.

The exterior consists of four storeys, an attic, and a basement, with six windows. The entrances are located in the outer bays and have gabled hoods with finials and enriched corbels. The round-arched entrances feature recessed panelled double doors with fanlights, which are accessed by steps. The ground floor windows are round-arched and have arcaded architraves supported by colonnettes. There are two central windows flanked by clustered pilasters. The second and third floors have paired, recessed sash windows with raking sills, while the first floor has windows with panelled aprons, moulded heads, and central colonnettes that support stilted enriched segmental arches. The second floor features enriched segmental heads flanked by large brackets that support a balcony with cast-iron railings, leading to groups of three casements on the third floor, each with square moulded heads on colonnettes. A corbelled modillion cornice runs below the dormers; the central dormer has three windows with colonnettes and a plate tracery rose window at the apex, topped with a finial, while the flanking dormers each have one window and a finial.

The interior has not been inspected. The subsidiary features include attached area cast and wrought-iron railings designed with roundels and scrolls on a low stone wall, along with gate piers at each entrance.
