Description

Numbers 21, 23, and 25 Great Ormond Street are a group of three terraced houses dating back to approximately 1708, with significant alterations and a refacing in the mid-19th century. Number 21 incorporates a later shop. The houses are constructed of stucco, Numbers 23 and 25 having rusticated ground floors. They are four storeys high with cellars, each house containing three windows. Number 21 features a mid-19th century shopfront with pilasters, an entablature with a projecting cornice, although the shop windows have been altered. The doorways to Numbers 23 and 25 are square-headed; Number 23 has an architraved doorway that is currently boarded up, while Number 25 has a panelled door with an overlight, also within a recessed architraved frame. The first-floor windows are recessed sash windows with cornices, and the third-floor windows of Number 25 are recessed sash windows with segmental arches. Numbers 21 and 23 have a cornice and blocking course, while Number 25 exhibits a cut-back cornice flanked by consoles at the third-floor level, topped with a parapet. The interiors of the houses have not been inspected. Attached to Number 25 are cast-iron railings enclosing the area. Number 23 was formerly the home of John Howard, a prison reformer, as marked by a plaque from the Greater London Council.
