Description
The Goods Shed at Clare Railway Station is a 19th-century structure built from red brick in Flemish bond, topped with a slate-covered roof. It is situated to the west of the main station building and features a small projection on the west side that was originally the railway clerk’s office, along with a 20th-century extension on the south side. On the east side, there is an 1865 type crane that has been relocated from another site and is now fixed on a concrete base.
The exterior of the goods shed showcases a pitched roof with parapets at the gable ends and prominent corner buttresses that rise to form corbelled kneelers. The east elevation includes a large opening with a flat lintel on the left, featuring 20th-century double timber doors with strap hinges. The long north elevation has two large openings accessed by a raised platform; these openings appear to be original, although the glazed doors with a five-pane over-light are from the 20th century. The west elevation displays cogged eaves and an oculus in the gable head. The small projection on the left, which was the clerk’s office, has 20th-century windows and doors. On the right, the large opening corresponding to the east elevation has been partially blocked, with a six-light window inserted. The south elevation features a small 20th-century red brick extension under a lean-to roof, followed by four large, slightly recessed panels, the third of which is lit at the top by a horizontal five-light window. The brickwork shows signs of repair in various places.
Inside, the east side of the goods shed retains the space for a railway carriage, along with an internal platform that was used for loading and unloading goods. The roof is mostly intact, consisting of six trusses with a tie beam, principal rafter, and king post. A modern partition divides the building into two large rooms.
