Description
Clare Castle is an ancient monument featuring a fragment of the keep situated atop a former Saxon mound, along with some walling lower down. It is believed to have originally been constructed by one of the Earls of Clare. After being alienated, the castle came into the possession of the Barnardistones. During the reign of Charles II, it was transferred to the Elwes family of Stoke, and in 1825, it was purchased by John Barker of the Priory, remaining in his family throughout the 19th century.
