Description
Wards Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the 16th century and later. It has two storeys and attics, built in a three-cell form. The structure is timber-framed and stands on a high brick plinth that is unusually stepped in three stages. The exterior is plastered, featuring remnants of comb-patterned pargetting in panels, and is topped with a thatched roof. There is one internal chimney stack and one end chimney stack, both made of plain red brick. The house has small-paned sash windows, primarily in tripartite arrangements, on each storey. The entrance features a six-panel led door with raised fielded panels, the top two of which are glazed, and is framed by an eared architrave, a bolection-moulded frieze, and a plain flat pediment.
At the rear, there is a single-storey 18th-century lean-to that extends along the entire length of the building, with the central section raised to one-and-a-half storeys in the early 19th century to create a stair wing. Inside, the farmhouse has exposed timberwork, much of which is reused. The original layout appears to have been a two-cell lobby-entrance plan. The ground floor rooms on either side of the stack feature roll-moulded joists and main beams, while the room at the southeast end has lighter timbering and seems to be an 18th-century extension. The roofs have been renewed, and the significant amount of reused timber suggests there may have been an earlier house on the site.
