Description
Upper Sulyards Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from around 1560 to 1580. The building has two storeys and attics, with a three-cell plan and three windows. It is timber-framed, with the front and sides encased in late 19th-century gault brick and plastered in the mid-20th century. The roof is slated, having originally been thatched.
There is an axial chimney made of narrow pink buff bricks featuring an original sawtooth shaft, which has been recapped in 20th-century red brick. To the left, there is an external end chimney also made of 20th-century red brick. The windows are late 19th-century three-light casements with transoms, splayed reveals, and hoodmoulds at the ground storey. The entrance door is a 20th-century boarded and battened style.
Inside, the farmhouse showcases good and complete framing that is fully exposed. The floor joists are laid flat and well-chamfered over the hall and parlour. There is a wide lintelled open fireplace in the hall, with close-studding and reverse-arch windbracing. The roof features a two-tier butt-purlin structure, with the upper tier also displaying prominent reverse windbracing.
